New Passenger Terminal Building

Airport Modernisation Programme (AMP)

Set to transform the travel experience of passengers at Bahrain International Airport (BIA), the Airport Modernisation Programme (AMP) is a two-phased venture that will elevate infrastructure, facilities, and services of Bahrain’s gateway, transforming BIA into a world-class hub in line with the Kingdom’s national vision and reputation as a leading financial, cultural, and aviation center in the Gulf region. Under the supervision of the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications (MTT) and Bahrain Airport Company (BAC), which oversees the project from start to finish, the USD 1.1 billion AMP will increase BIA’s capacity to 14 million passengers a year, satisfying a significantly larger number of travelers and putting the Kingdom’s aviation sector on the world map.

The AMP, launched in 2016, is part of large-scale infrastructure development projects worth more than $32 billion and set to accelerate Bahrain’s diversification efforts and overall economic growth.

The new terminal will be more than quadrupled in size, offering expanded passenger and cargo capacities, world-class facilities, and commercial offerings, placing BIA on par with its global counterparts and catering to the forecasted growth in passenger traffic expected in the region. Designed to meet Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) specifications, the new terminal reflects BIA’s ‘boutique’ approach, with a focus on sustaining efficiency, superior levels of service, and the convenient travel experience that BIA is renowned for.

The multi-phase development programme includes the new Passengers Terminal Building, hospitality, restructuring aviation fuel, a new MRO hanger, elevating operational and services of Cargo, and a new fire station.

New Passenger Terminal Building

The New state-of-the-art Passenger Terminal Building, located within the airport in Muharraq, is set to be 4 times bigger than the current terminal, and will mark a turning point for the BIA.

At 210,000 sqm in area and upon completion, Bahrain new Passengers Terminal Building will accommodate 14 million passengers per annum and capable of processing 130,000 air traffic movements per annum with a handling capacity of 4,800 bags per peak hour.

Development of the new terminal will also result in expansion of the check-in area, baggage and immigration halls, and security screening areas.

Ensuring that the passengers enjoy an enhanced travel experience even from before take-off, the AMP will also increase the number of parking spaces available, adding a new multi storey car park to offer a total capacity of 2,700 parking spaces for passengers and visitors.
