New COVID-19 preventive measures at
Bahrain International Airport

To ensure the health and wellbeing of passengers and staff at Bahrain International Airport (BIA), Bahrain Airport Company has implemented all recommended precautionary measures considering the improving global conditions and the proximity of recovery of the COVID-19 pandemic.

All arriving passengers will be subject to COVID-19 testing at a cost of BD30 and are required to self-isolate for 10 days. Travelers will be tested again at the end of their quarantine period. Payments can be made on arrival in cash and electronically, or in advance via the ‘BeAware Bahrain’ mobile application. Cabin crew, diplomatic staff, and those arriving from medical travel are exempt. Transit passengers are not required to undergo testing or subject to quarantine. Exit swabs will cost an additional BHD 30 and can be paid for through the app or at the testing center.

Citizens planning to travel abroad must comply with entry procedures and requirements at their destinations. They must also sign a declaration form prior to departure, agreeing to bear any medical costs while abroad as well as mandatory COVID-19 testing and 10-day self-isolation period upon return to Bahrain.

In line with new health and safety measures, access to the terminal is restricted to passengers and staff, although exceptions will be made for those accompanying passengers with reduced mobility or unaccompanied minors. Temperature screening is mandatory at entry points to the terminal and before boarding, and anyone with a high fever will be subject to a secondary medical assessment. To allow time for additional screening procedures, passengers will need to arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before their flight departure time.

Passengers must adhere to social distancing measures at the terminal. Footprint stickers and seat blockers are in place to remind people to keep their distance. Wearing face masks is mandatory for all passengers and staff at the airport. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) vending machines that provide hand sanitizer, disposable gloves, and face masks are also available for passengers before and after the economy and premium check-in counters and at the arrivals area.

In addition to general cleaning, all frequently touched surfaces are sanitized, and plastic security trays are sanitized at the entry and exit of the security locations.

A disinfection team is also on standby 24/7 to respond to any incidents. Passenger and staff shuttle buses are regularly disinfected and are running at 50 per cent occupancy to maintain social distancing.

Meet and Greet services and lounges are temporarily unavailable, although core airport facilities are still operational, including Bahrain Duty Free, food and beverage outlets, ATMs, foreign exchange facilities, and Car Park A, as well as car rental and taxi services. Cargo services are also still operational.

Passengers who do not adhere to the preventive measures in place will be refused access to the airport. The measures will be regularly updated based on new scientific findings as the situation evolves. Passengers who do not adhere to the preventive measures in place are refused to access to the terminal building.

In line with the Ministry of Health’s policies and procedures, all arriving passengers must complete the health declaration form and are subject COVID-19 testing at a cost of BHD 30. Payments can be made on arrival in cash and electronically, or in advance via the ‘BeAware Bahrain’ mobile application.

If a passenger tests positive, the Ministry will take further action. Those who test negative will complete immigration formalities and collect their baggage. Passengers should adhere to social distancing measures at the baggage reclaim area and leave the terminal as soon as possible to minimize the possibility of transmission.

Arriving passengers are also required to self-isolate for 10 days and will be tested again at the end of their quarantine period. Exit swabs will cost an additional BHD 30 and can be paid for through the app or at the testing center.

Biohazardous waste is segregated at the Arrivals area and washrooms. BAC has placed sanitizers in various locations around the airport for passengers to use.


10.) What measures are in place for shuttle buses?

In line with social distancing measures, passenger shuttle buses are running at 50% occupancy. Hand sanitizers are provided onboard and drivers wear masks and gloves at all times. Drivers and passengers are also temperature screened before embarking. All buses are cleaned and disinfected daily.


11.) Are shops, restaurants, and other services still available?

Bahrain Duty Free, some of the food and beverage outlets, ATMs, foreign exchange facilities, as well as car rental and taxi services are available. In line with social distancing measures, the number of customers allowed in stores is restricted.

Social distancing markings are placed 2-meters apart from the service desk to the entrance. Messages are also displayed to remind customers to follow social distancing measures while queuing.

Passengers are encouraged to pay using cards and reduce use of cash. Wireless card machines, with a separate keypad for those who need to enter a pin, are regularly disinfected with alcohol solution. Collection points are only for picking up products.

Shops are sterilized and disinfected using approved corrective chemicals. Alongside wearing proper PPE and following social distancing guidelines, staff will frequently wash their hands and disinfect contact surfaces.
